Coit Tower Elevator Renovation
San Francisco, CA

Joseph Chow & Associates is requested to repair the Coit Tower elevator. The scope of work includes design of the elevator cab at Coit Tower and hoistway entrances. The elevator is an overhead geared traction type and with two speed AC control and has manual car switch operation that is typical of elevators of that era. The specified elevator will be fully automatic and will include all features and controls required for compliance with ADA and California Title 24.

The existing elevator was manufactured and installed by Otis Elevator Company in 1933 when Coit Tower was built. The client has indicated a strong desire to retain the character of the existing car enclosure and has specifically requested that the existing collapsing car gate be retained. Unfortunately, the elevator code no longer allows this type of gate due to safety considerations and the potential pinching hazard.
